A song of mourning

A song of mourning

It has been a tough week for the peds team, and doubly tough for Arianna to prepare to step away rather than step in.  Some words for these warrior-heroes.

There is pain before change, during change, after change.
But believe, bars have been raised, lives saved, this is a better place – a safer place – than it was yesterday.
We pray and we wait and care in the meantime, the stepping away time, that God will calm the fears, tears, and lost years of lives cut short.
Sometimes healing only happens in a big heart, not in a tiny body.  In the deep love and the deep void of those who mourn, who somehow, in some strange way, the Lord calls blessed.
The paradox, dependence, where in weakness we find strength, where brokenness can mend.  Not good as new – good enough to be broken again.
Only in Him and through Him and to Him does any of it make sense, that losers could win and the fight could begin again, as it did yesterday and will tomorrow.
The little ones are in his hands, from Him they came, to Him they go again.  We hope, we pray, not today. . .please not today.  Sometimes today comes too soon, at midnight in a hospital room.
But there is hope, that this today will different.  A day of not today.  That the pray-ers will pray and the savior will save and all we do will not be in vain.
Because it never is in vain, the fight is His, the child is His, the life is His, the knife is His.  We kiss the scars on his hands and feet every time we start an IV because we know His words “as you have done to the least of these, you have done to me.”
